Haibara was established in 1806 in the Nihonbashi district of Edo (modern day Tokyo) as a retailer in “washi"or Japanese handmade paper, and to this day we continue to supply our customers with quality paper in whatever quantity they desire, from single sheets up.
Paper making is a highly respected traditional craft in Japan, and the paper itself is used, not only for drawing and artwork, but as decorative wrapping at such important occasions as coming of age, weddings, funerals and when paying respect to one’s ancestors. In addition, down through the ages washi has been a favored material for making boxes and other containers, notebooks, folders and various other items, adding color and a softness to the touch. Today washi is becoming popular outside of Japan as well, as more and more people recognize the unique quality of Japanese handmade paper.
As dealers in Japanese paper and paper crafted items our major concern is for “dependability, tradition and craftsmanship”, and our goal is to keep the tradition of washi alive for future generations.
In our store you will find a wide selection of handcrafted papers from all over Japan, as well as a fine selection of original goods made from washi. Let us help make this important Japanese traditional craft a part of your life.
